Graphic designers employ different techniques to develop ideas for their projects. Generating many thumbnails is one common way to jump start our brains. Some designers work better with words first then channel their ideas into graphics.
One way of combining both is by mind mapping. Mind maps help put your thoughts and ideas to paper using a structure that only appears chaotic but is actually organized and well structured and helps you think of ideas you would normally not think of. Think of a mind map as a tree. The tree is your central idea. Branches sprout from the tree. Each branch represents a sub idea. Leaves further sprout from the branches creating yet another layer of sub ideas. Words and visual images are used to create the foliage of your main idea.
